Welcome back to  Inside 25/8 Fintech .

Every week, we use this space to step out of the daily transactional noise and look at the core principles that drive long-term business success. This week, we connect three deeply personal yet highly strategic threads: why regulatory depth in global fintech cannot be rushed, how unconditional trust serves as the unshakable foundation in both business and life, and why the most significant milestones are often achieved through unglamorous, unconventional execution in the engine room.

The Yacht Club Setup and Regulatory Reality 🚢

When looking at a successful corporate group from the outside, most people only see the shiny facade: the press releases, the funding rounds, or the announcement of complex multi-million-dollar structures.

Today, I want to pull back the curtain on our engine room. Because the truth is, the most significant milestones are often born in the most unglamorous places - and they demand a brutal endurance for details that you will never find on any official roadmap.

In spring 2023, I was standing on board the MSC Grandiosa in the Yacht Club. Phone in hand. Anyone who saw me probably thought: "Typical Thomas, the classic workaholic who cannot disconnect even on the high seas."

And yes, for a long time, I was exactly that. But thanks to my wife Nadine and my core team, I have learned to protect my boundaries, step by step, from vacation to vacation. In today's digital era, this is a critical survival skill for any founder - if you do not actively protect your recovery phases, your focus will be instantly diluted by the noise.

However, that specific phone call was not an operational micro-management chat. It was the absolute foundation for our US setup:

From that ship, we completed the legal filings to establish SKYT Partners LLC in the United States and initiated the complex structural preparations for our US hedge fund, the SKYT Multi Strategy Fund LP.

Building a global company in highly regulated financial markets is not a quick 6-month project. There are no shortcuts. You cannot simply say: "We are establishing an entity now, and we will be live in six months." The US regulatory system demands absolute transparency and personal integrity.

To manage a US hedge fund and be admitted as an NFA Member, as well as a CTA (Commodity Trading Advisor) and CPO (Commodity Pool Operator) with the CFTC, I had to personally go through the rigorous FINRA examinations. I passed the Series 3 (National Commodity Futures Examination) and the Series 34 (Retail Off-Exchange Forex Examination).

True global scaling cannot be forced. It requires an outstanding team that keeps you grounded, and the ironclad patience to navigate complex regulatory requirements step by step.

Thomas & Nadine (TUN): The Unshakable Foundation 💍

On September 9th, we celebrate our 17th wedding anniversary. 17 years of Thomas and Nadine. Anyone who knows me or has read my book knows that my life's motto TUN (DO IT) does not just stand for "Tag und Nacht" (day and night) or "Nicht Unnötig Trödeln" (don't dawdle unnecessarily), but literally represents our names: Thomas Und Nadine.

No written business contract and no legal structure can ever replace the blind, absolute trust of a functioning partnership. It was Nadine who pushed me out of my comfort zone years ago with the words "Just start writing," which made my first book possible in the first place.

And this trust was put to its hardest test on September 9th, 2011, our 2nd wedding anniversary:

Nadine was lying on the couch, suffering from a severe, life-threatening thrombosis. I sat next to her with a sudden facial paralysis (Bell's palsy) that completely shattered my previous corporate hamster wheel.

We could not go out for a fancy dinner that day. We lay next to each other, marked by physical setbacks, and toasted with mineral water from champagne glasses through plastic straws.

When the storm rages outside, you need a partner by your side who pulls in the exact same direction without hesitation. True alignment does not show when things are easy and champagne is flowing - it shows when you are down on the ground together and decide to stand up and keep moving.

Inked in Styria: FBI Fingerprints and the Power of Your Network 🔍

Back to our US setup. To be registered with the NFA, US law requires a very specific element as part of the background check: physical fingerprints on official FBI fingerprint cards.

What is completely normal in the US - where you can order fingerprint cards on Amazon and walk into a local printing station on any street corner - turned into a bureaucratic nightmare in the middle of Styria, Austria:

  • The US Embassy in Vienna? Had no answers and could not help.
  • The local municipality? "No, we do not do that here, it is technically impossible for us."

We were facing a brick wall. The entire multi-million-dollar US setup was on the verge of stalling because of a few missing ink fingerprints.

So, I picked up the phone and called a long-time friend of mine who works for the criminal police. His answer was exactly what true action-oriented builders look for: "Thomas, no problem. When are you coming over?"

Shortly after, I was sitting at the police department, my fingers inked and pressed onto the FBI cards. The photo I shared on social media this week was taken at exactly that moment.

Never let small, seemingly insurmountable details stop you. When official bureaucracy fails, you need a strong personal network and the courage to go down unconventional paths.

No matter how big your vision is: at the end of the day, success is always decided in the engine room of reality.

It is the hard compliance work, the unconditional trust in your closest partners, and the willingness to pragmatically solve absurd hurdles that make the real difference.

Stay focused and trust the process.

Your Thomas
